Social Stability by Means of Khudi: Study of Iqbal’s Wisdom in the Light of Qur’anic Verses

Abstract

This paper explores Iqbal’s philosophy of Khudi (Self-discovery based identity) as a foundational schema for an individual, in becoming a core element of nation’s stability.  The contemporary socio-political thought attributes national strength to the institutional and economic power. While, Iqbal believes that nation’s energy and stability entirely depend on moral discipline and ethical practice of the individuals. The gap among two views, as a research problem leads this study with an objective to search Iqbal’s ideological base of the argument. A student of Iqbal-Studies, finds that the divine message in Qur’anic verses, make Iqbal’s theoretical frameworks. Same is the case of Khudi and its culmination. Therefore, a thematic analysis of Iqbal’s poetry has been carried out, keeping this paradigm in background.  The study of relevant verses through exegesis, depicts a synthesis between Qur’anic notions about human status and destiny, with Iqbal’s ideology about human life and fortune. The essence of Iqbal’s view is, that the intrinsic connection between individual and the nation, remains the master key to success. The findings illustrate that Iqbal’s ideology gives a holistic ethical model of human development. The individuals need to be nurtured through triad of self recognition as vicegerent of God, self-control/accountability, and self-purification through sacrifice for the collective benefit. In Iqbal’s view, this model can guarentee a sustainable strength, leading to the ultimate success for individuals and the nations. Iqbal sees individuals as the main building blocks of national architecture; those who are enlightened with self-recognition, self-purification, and self-elevation; motivated with faith in their ideology, can make the nation dignified reaching sky heights.
