The Status and Role of Women in the Light of Iqbal’s Thought: A Research and Analytical Review

Abstract

This research paper critically explores the concept of women in the thought of Allama Muhammad Iqbal by analyzing their status, responsibilities, and intellectual significance within his broader philosophical framework. Although considerable studies have explored Iqbal’s views on women, relatively limited attention has been given to critically examining the relationship between women’s participation in social life, their familial responsibilities, the contemporary applicability of his concept of women’s empowerment and its limitations. This study examines Iqbal’s concept concerning the status and role of women in relation to contemporary social trends and the changing realities of women’s lives, highlighting its relevance and practical significance in the present context. The paper addresses the main question: How can Iqbal’s views on women’s empowerment and social role be relevant and applicable in terms of their strengths, limitations in the contemporary context?  The findings indicate that Iqbal as a philosopher, poet, and reformer, viewed women as a vital force in the moral, cultural, and spiritual development of society and regarded them as central to the continuity and refinement of civilization. He supported women’s education and intellectual advancement but emphasized that such progress should remain connected with ethical values, spiritual consciousness, and social responsibility.
